Like most business people in other parts of the world, Hong Kong business people usually adopt a conservative approach and prefer to maintain the status quo. It is therefore not advisable to be over-critical about government policies (both for Hong Kong and Mainland China) in general. In any case, try to avoid raising topics of a political or controversial nature since that could result in embarrassment.

The most popular topics have to do with the general economic and business conditions. The stock market, interest rate trends, inflation and labour market conditions are common topics at business and social functions. On the other hand, one can opt for a more light-hearted style by making reference to some of the major events that happen to take place around that time – such as the Rugby Seven, as well as the 2008 Olympics which will be partially hosted in Hong Kong.
