An Introduction to Argentina - Part 1
General information about Argentina
Argentina is a cosmopolitan country where businesspeople are generally received with respect and cordiality. Buenos Aires and all major cities are pleasant places to do business. Argentines are very ambitious, winning at all costs is not the general rule. Many executives speak English as well as other European languages. While organizational structures are sophisticated and business dealings formal, Argentines do business in a relaxed, friendly fashion. They can be argumentative yet tend to avoid open conflict and direct opposition to differing viewpoints.

Located in the southern hemisphere, Argentina covers an area of almost 3.8 million square kilometers, 2.8 million on the continent, the rest in Antarctica. Approximately 54% are plains [grasslands and savannahs], 23% plateaus, the other 23% mountains. The country is 3,800 km. long and located between latitude 22º and 55º.
Argentina's main characteristic is the enormous contrast between the immense eastern plains and the impressive Andes mountain range to the west. From Jujuy to Tierra del Fuego, the Andes present marvelous contrasts: the Northwest plateaus, the lake region, and the forests and glaciers in Patagonia..
Between the Paraná and Uruguay rivers, the Argentine Mesopotamia [the provinces of Entre Ríos, Corrientes and Misiones] is formed by low hills, where marshlands evidence the ancient courses of these great rivers. In some places within the subtropical rain forest, there are immense fissures which provide such spectacular phenomena as the Iguazú Falls. The Pampas, in the center of Argentina, is the largest and best-known area of the plains.Farming and cattle-breeding are the main activities in this area, which includes the province of Buenos Aires, the northeast of La Pampa, the south of Córdoba and as well as the south of Santa Fe. To the south, the plains give way to small hills in Tandil and de la Ventana, and to the west, to the Córdoba hills. Towards the south, from the Andes to the sea, are the barren elevated plains, exposed to strong winds during most of the year. The Atlantic coast, lined with high cliffs, forms massive indentations like the Peninsula Valdés, with its spectacular and unique colonies of sea animals.

Climate: The seasons are the reverse of the ones in the Northern hemisphere: i.e. Winter is in June, July and August. The temperature is measured by degrees Celsius[*C]. To convert Celsius to Fahrenheit multiply by 9, divide by 5 and add 32.
The occidental boundary is formed by the Andes Mountains with the highest peak in America: the Aconcagua [6,959m]. Naturally, the country experiences extremes in temperature between the northern and southern parts. The south with its famous glaciers, ski resorts and spectacular lakes has snowfalls and low temperatures in winter, while the north is hot in summer and offers a wide variety of landscapes worth visiting.
