Iranian men love football[soccer]. The national team has done well over the past decade, so asking after their recent fortunes will be received well. Most Iranians follow the English and Spanish leagues particularly closely.

Topics to Avoid
Avoid questions around polemics in Islam. However, inquisitive questions about Islam are acceptable.
Contentious issues that may lead to heated debate are the Revolution of 1979, Iranian-US relations and Israeli foreign and domestic policy.
Do not ask personal questions unless a very close relationship has been established. Similarly, do not divulge such information about yourself.
Avoid making any negative comments about Iran regarding the leadership, infrastructure or people.
