Singapore: Conversation

Conversation
Conversation is mostly business focused with food, weather, and the state of the world economy or your flight into town being the exceptions. A general greeting is “Have you eaten?” or “Have you taken your lunch?” Questions about family are fine as well. Compliments are rarely given unless the meeting partners know each other very well. Local or regional politics are typically also not a topic addressed during business meetings. Meetings are typically focused on the subject and not so much on emotions. This should be reflected in the tone of voice. English is widely understood and one should speak at normal speed and in a clear voice. Formal handshakes are the norm, however, do not squeeze too hard here as your counterpart may use less firmness than you might expect yourself.
